"We all know what to do and what not to do, but it is very difficult to learn how to be. Real knowledge is found not in knowing, but rather in being. Knowing is mere information. Practice leads to direct experience and valid knowledge"    - Swami Rama

Education is the key to better life, but reaching the children, in the mountains, is really difficult. Houses are scattered and it is difficult to find well-equipped schools. If there is a school, there are usually no teachers. When there are teachers, the student teacher ratio is very high and there are often not enough teaching aids.

To tackle this situation, RDI drew up a multi-dimensional program to enable the overall development of individuals by ensuring quality education, addressing career needs, ensuring good health and focusing on personality and lifestyle issues using a holistic approach.

Projects:

* Non-formal and Project Based Education: These projects are carried out to promote learning among children who are not able to attend school as well as enhance quality and learning experience for those attending schools. For project based learning, eight modules on subjects like water, air, energy, health, hygiene and nutrition, agriculture, forestry etc. have been developed to be carried out in schools over a 4-6 weeks period. About 5000 children have been so far benefited from this program.

* Village Libraries: A selected package of around 150 Hindi books on literature, history, geography, science, general knowledge, biographies, competitive exams etc. and games is provided to each village library by RDI. The libraries are placed in people's homes or at schools and librarians are trained by RDI. After two years these books are then passed on to villages further away from them.

* Technical education / vocational training: Children and adolescents are provided opportunities to enhance their skills in the areas of English speaking, computer learning, tailoring, embroidery and the like. Sponsorship is also provided to children to pursue any technical courses they choose.

* Scholarships: Scholarships are provided for children from primary to graduate level under Swami Rama Scholarships, Spanish scholarships and through individual donors.
