FOUNDER
H.H. Swami Rama, the
founder of Himalayan Institute, was born in 1925 in Village Toli, Mallabadalpur,
Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand (erstwhile part of Uttar Pradesh). He was
initiated into many yogic practices by his reverend master. He was installed
as the Shankaracharya of Karvirpitham in Central India
at the young age of twenty-four. Swamiji relinquished this position
to pursue intense sadhana (meditation) in the caves of
the Himalayas. On successfully completing his sadhana,
he was directed by his master to venture to Japan and the West to illustrate
& prove the scientific basis of the ancient yogic practices.

With an invitation
from Dr. Elmer Green of the Menninger Foundation in Topeka, Kansas,
Swamiji convincingly demonstrated the capacity of the mind to control
the so-called involuntary physiological parameters such as heart rate,
temperature and brain waves. Reports of his work have been documented
in the World Book Science Annual 1974, the 1973 Encyclopedia Britannica
Yearbook of Science, the Time-Life Journal 1973, Nature Science Annual
and numerous other publications.
Swamiji's work in
the United States continued for twenty-three years. During this period,
he established the Himalayan International Institute of Yoga Science
and Philosophy of the USA. Swamiji became well known in the US as
a yogi, teacher, philosopher, poet, humanist and philanthropist. His
models of preventive medicine, holistic health and stress management
had permeated the mainstream of Western medicine.

Swamiji left this physical
plane in November, 1996, but the seeds he has sown continue to sprout,
bloom and bear fruit. His teachings, embodied in the words "Love,
Serve, Remember", continue to be a source of inspiration
for humanity at large. The Swami
Rama Centre (SRC), at Jolly Grant, was established to ensure that
his words and works are forever accessible to countless spiritual seekers
as a guiding light & source of inspiration.
